DON’T GO SHUSH! YOUR VOICES MATTER IN GLOBAL GOVERNANCE: TITUS URGES THE YOUTH

In a resounding message, Titus Owusu Darko, a renowned youth leader and visionary, urged over 600 delegates at the 2025 Lifelink Model United Nations to recognize the significance of youth participation in global governance. Seated alongside H.E. Jurgen Heissel, Austria’s Ambassador to Ghana, who applauded his sentiments, Darko emphasized that “we, the youth, are the present and the future. Our voice matters in global governance; going shush will negatively affect us as grown-up leaders make decisions on our behalf without our voices.”

This powerful statement underscores the need for inclusive decision-making processes that amplify youth perspectives. As the next generation of leaders, young people bring fresh ideas, innovative solutions, and a unique understanding of the challenges they face. Their voices are crucial in shaping policies that impact their lives, communities, and the world at large.

Darko’s advocacy is particularly significant in the context of global governance, where youth representation is often lacking. By ignoring youth voices, we risk creating policies that fail to address the needs and concerns of this demographic. This can lead to disillusionment, disengagement, and even social unrest.

In contrast, empowering youth to participate in decision-making processes can have numerous benefits. It can foster innovation and creativity. Young people bring new perspectives and ideas to the table, which can lead to innovative solutions to complex problems. Again, Titus mentioned it will enhance accountability and transparency. Youth participation can help ensure that decision-making processes are transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of all stakeholders.

Titus Owusu Darko’s message serves as a call to action for governments, international organizations, and civil society to prioritize youth participation in global governance. This can be achieved through various means, such as Establishing youth-led initiatives and organizations, Creating inclusive and accessible spaces for youth participation and Providing training and capacity-building programs for youth.

As we move forward, it is essential to recognize the value of youth voices in shaping our collective future. By empowering young people to participate in global governance, we can build a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world for all.
