KINSHASA, Sept 9, 2025 — Violence and chaos marred what was meant to be a historic night for Congolese football, as thousands of furious fans rioted inside the Stade des Martyrs following DR Congo’s dramatic 3-2 home defeat to Senegal in a high-stakes 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The stadium, filled to capacity with over 80,000 passionate supporters, was initially electric with hope. DR Congo stormed into a 2-0 lead in the first half, raising expectations of a crucial victory that would have boosted their standing in the qualification race. But the joy was short-lived. Senegal, showing their championship pedigree, mounted a stunning second-half comeback, scoring three goals and silencing the home crowd.
As the final whistle blew, the atmosphere inside the stadium turned volatile. Outraged by the collapse, sections of the crowd began destroying stadium property. Plastic seats were ripped out, barriers were torn down, and parts of the tunnel area were reportedly vandalized. Video footage circulating on social media showed angry fans hurling objects onto the pitch and confronting security forces, who struggled to contain the situation.
Authorities responded by deploying riot police to restore order, but not before significant damage had been done. Emergency exits were reportedly overwhelmed as spectators fled the growing unrest. No official injuries have been confirmed yet, though several people were seen receiving medical attention outside the venue.
This result is a major blow to DR Congo’s World Cup aspirations. With qualification hanging in the balance, pressure is now mounting on both the players and coaching staff to deliver results in the remaining fixtures. Head coach is expected to face intense scrutiny in the coming days, with questions being raised about tactical decisions and game management.
The Congolese Football Federation has yet to issue an official statement regarding the fan violence or the potential disciplinary consequences the team might face from FIFA or CAF. However, sanctions — including fines or stadium bans — could be on the horizon if the chaos is deemed to have violated safety protocols.
