Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died in Zanzibar after being treated for a heart condition.
Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death on Monday.
Mr Ameir died at 08:00 local time at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment, Mr Ndejembi said.
“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,” he said.
Mr Ndejembi offered condolences to the president, her family, relatives and friends, and to Tanzanians.
Funeral arrangements have begun in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, he added.
Mr Ameir, an agriculturalist, became Tanzania’s first gentleman when Ms Suluhu Hassan took office in 2021 after the death of President John Magufuli. The couple married in 1978 and had four children, three sons and a daughter.
Their daughter, Mwanu Hafidh Ameir, is a politician and a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
Mr Ameir kept a low public profile. Since Ms Suluhu Hassan became vice-president, and later president, the couple were rarely pictured together.
