Ghana’s official government email system (.gov.gh) has been offline since around 5:00 a.m. on Monday, August 25, causing widespread concern over national security and data privacy. The disruption, which has lasted nearly two days, has affected communication across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The National Information Technology Agency (NITA) confirmed the issue, citing a “technical challenge.” CEO Mark Oliver Kevor stated that NITA is working with its technical partner, eSolutions, to restore the service, but no timeline has been provided.
With sensitive government communications stalled, experts warn of the risks: reliance on unofficial platforms, exposure to cyber threats, and the spread of misinformation. While some speculate a cyberattack, no such breach has been confirmed.
This incident underscores the urgent need for improved cybersecurity infrastructure, resilient digital systems, and transparent protocols during IT crises.
