The world’s largest passenger aircraft, an Emirates Airbus A380 (registration A6-EUG), touched down at Kotoka International Airport, Accra, after diverting from its scheduled route. The aircraft was operating Flight EK261 from Dubai to São Paulo/Guarulhos when a smoke indication was detected in the cargo hold.
The alert was transmitted via ACARS, the aircraft’s onboard communication system that relays technical and safety information to airline operations in real time. As a precautionary measure, the flight crew elected to divert to Accra to ensure passenger and crew safety.
The diversion drew attention at Kotoka due to the rarity of an A380 landing in Ghana. Safety procedures were reportedly followed upon landing, highlighting the effectiveness of modern aircraft monitoring systems and emergency response protocols.
