Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has expressed concern over the country’s heavy reliance on imported food, revealing that Ghana spends over $2 billion annually on food that could be produced locally.
She emphasized that this trend must change, urging investment in local agriculture, improved infrastructure, and stronger support for farmers. According to her, boosting domestic food production is key to strengthening the economy, creating jobs, and ensuring food security.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s remarks reignite an important national conversation about self-sufficiency and the future of Ghana’s agricultural sector.
