In a momentous gesture that bridges history, diplomacy, and education, the British National Archives has officially presented an authentic copy of The Bond of 1844 to the Parliament of Ghana. Widely regarded as one of the foundational documents in Ghana’s colonial and constitutional evolution, the treaty holds deep significance in the nation’s historical journey.
The presentation took place on July 26, 2025, during a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, by Juliette Desplat, Head of International Affairs at the British National Archives, and Keith McMahon, Chargé d’Affaires of the British High Commission in Ghana.

Speaking at the event, Speaker Bagbin expressed heartfelt gratitude to the British government for what he described as a “proud and meaningful milestone” in Ghana’s democratic and historical journey.
“It is a historic moment for me and for the people of Ghana. This document captures an important part of the development of Ghana,” he stated.
He further announced that the original document would be put on public display in Parliament for educational purposes and historical reference, ensuring future generations understand the roots of Ghana’s legal and constitutional heritage.
