In a stunning turn of events, a U.S. federal judge has dramatically reduced the defamation award against former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. Initially, a jury had awarded $18 million to award-winning investigative journalist Anas Aremyaw Anas, finding Agyapong guilty of maliciously defaming him. This was initially seen as a landmark victory for Anas and a strong statement against defamation.

However, Agyapong’s legal team filed a motion for remittitur, arguing that the award was excessive. The court agreed, maintaining that Agyapong did defame Anas, but slashing the monetary compensation to a mere $500. The judge cited the original amount as disproportionate to the harm caused.

This decision has sparked widespread debate. While it affirms that Agyapong did defame Anas, the drastically reduced award raises questions about the value placed on reputation and the potential chilling effect on investigative journalism. It remains to be seen how this will impact future defamation cases and the broader media landscape.
