A rift appears to be growing between former allies US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk over the president’s budget bill. Trump expressed his surprise and disappointment with Musk’s criticisms, marking a notable shift in their once-close relationship.
Musk, who previously endorsed Trump and reportedly invested heavily in his return to the White House, has publicly condemned the budget bill as a “disgusting abomination.” His opposition stems from concerns about wasteful government spending, or “pork,” within the bill.
Trump, in response, suggested that Musk’s discontent might be linked to the removal of subsidies for electric vehicles, potentially impacting Tesla. However, Musk refuted this, advocating for the removal of wasteful spending while acknowledging the unfairness of leaving oil and gas subsidies untouched.
The tension escalated on X, where Musk accused Trump of “ingratitude,” claiming his support was crucial for Trump’s election victory. He also denied having seen the budget bill beforehand.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill will increase the national debt by $2.4 trillion over 10 years and leave millions without government-backed health insurance. While the White House disputes these figures, the disagreement highlights significant concerns about the bill’s impact.
Musk’s role in slashing government spending, though resulting in reported savings, has faced scrutiny. This clash between Trump and Musk underscores the complexities of political alliances and the challenges of navigating fiscal policy.
