Several people have died and others are injured after a passenger train went off the tracks near Riedlingen, close to Stuttgart in south-west Germany.

Police confirmed the derailment resulted in multiple casualties, though the exact number of fatalities has not yet been released. The incident occurred shortly after a storm swept through the area, which may have contributed to the crash.

Images of the crash show carriages turned on their sides and heavy emergency service presence. Fallen trees can also be seen at the scene.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the derailment and working to assist survivors.
