A devastating head-on collision in Namibia has claimed the lives of 14 people, including 11 correctional officers, a police officer, and two civilians. The accident occurred on Saturday near the town of Mariental, approximately 270km south of the capital, Windhoek.

Authorities confirmed that 19 people were traveling in two vehicles belonging to the Namibian Correctional Service and the police. Three other prison officers remain in critical condition. Namibia’s President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “No words can truly capture the depth of this loss,” while commending the dedication of the fallen officers.

Home Affairs Minister Lucia Iipumbu extended condolences and urged the public not to share distressing images from the scene. Namibia’s Motor Vehicle Accident Fund has pledged support for affected families, including assistance with burials and medical care.

Namibia continues to struggle with one of the highest road traffic fatality rates globally, despite a population of just three million.
