At least 21 people lost their lives on Friday evening after a bus carrying mourners overturned and plunged into a ditch near Kisumu, in southwestern Kenya. The vehicle was en route from Kakamega to Kisumu when the driver lost control while approaching a roundabout at high speed, according to regional traffic enforcement officer Peter Maina. The victims include 10 women, 10 men, and a 10-year-old girl.

This devastating accident follows another fatal crash on Thursday in Naivasha, where nine workers died in a separate bus incident at a railway crossing.

Kenyan police continue to attribute many road accidents to speeding and reckless driving.

Reacting to the tragedy, President William Ruto expressed his condolences on Twitter, saying:

“Our prayers are with the victims of the terrible accident that occurred tonight on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway. May the Almighty give strength to the families to bear with the loss. We wish speedy recovery to the injured.”

The President also called on traffic enforcement authorities to hold accountable anyone whose negligence contributed to the crash and urged stronger action to prevent future road tragedies.
