Tragedy in Kenya: Light Aircraft and Train-Bus Collisions Claim Multiple Lives

August 7, 2025 – Nairobi, Kenya

Kenya is reeling from a pair of devastating transportation accidents that have claimed at least ten lives in the span of a single day.

Medical Charity Plane Crash in Nairobi

A light aircraft operated by the respected medical charity Amref Flying Doctors crashed in Nairobi’s densely populated Githurai area on Thursday afternoon, killing six people and leaving two others critically injured. The Cessna aircraft had taken off from Wilson Airport, en route to Hargeisa, Somalia, when it lost radio and radar contact with air traffic control just three minutes after takeoff, according to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.

The plane was carrying four people – medical personnel including doctors, nurses, and the pilot – all of whom perished when the aircraft went down and burst into flames upon hitting a residential building.

Tragically, two civilians on the ground were also killed in the impact, and two others sustained serious injuries. The crash left a deep crater in the ground and caused panic in the area as flames and smoke engulfed the site.

“Before I could take my phone to record, the flash was gone and smoke was billowing,” eyewitness Patricia Kombo told the BBC. “We then heard people screaming and running… We discovered it was a plane crash and saw the sunken hole the crash had created in the ground.”

Authorities including the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, and aviation experts have been dispatched to the scene. Investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the sudden communication loss and crash.

Amref Flying Doctors, known for their lifesaving emergency evacuations and medical outreach across Africa, expressed deep sorrow.

“At this time, we are cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation,” said Amref CEO Stephen Gitau in an official statement.

Train and Bus Collision in Naivasha

On the same day, tragedy struck again in Naivasha, central Kenya, where a train collided with a bus at a railway crossing. At least four people were killed, and several others were injured.

According to a Red Cross worker, the bus belonged to the Kenya Pipeline Company and was transporting staff members finishing their morning shift at a training center. All injured staff were rushed to local hospitals for emergency treatment.

The circumstances leading to the collision are still under investigation, but initial reports suggest potential failure to heed crossing signals.

A Nation in Mourning

These dual tragedies have shaken Kenya and raised urgent questions about transportation safety, especially in urban and industrial zones. As families grieve and rescue efforts continue, the public and officials alike are calling for renewed commitment to aviation and traffic safety oversight.

We will continue to follow developments in both incidents and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Our hearts go out to all those affected by these tragedies.
