Tragedy in Hamilton: Ghanaian International Student Belinda Sarkodie Fatally Shot in Gang-Related Crossfire

A promising life has been tragically cut short in Hamilton, Canada, as 26-year-old Ghanaian international student Belinda Sarkodie was shot and killed by unknown assailants while waiting at a bus stop on King Street. The devastating incident occurred on Friday, July 11, and has sent shockwaves through both the local community and the Ghanaian diaspora in Canada.

According to preliminary reports, Ms. Sarkodie was simply checking her reflection in a mirror at the bus stop when she was fatally shot in the head. Two other individuals were also involved in the violent episode—one was pronounced dead at the scene, while the third sustained injuries but is reportedly recovering.

Eyewitness accounts, including one relayed to Bigscout Media, suggest that Belinda may not have been the intended target. Authorities suspect she was an unintended victim, caught in the crossfire of a gang-related shootout, raising serious concerns about rising gun violence and its impact on innocent bystanders.

The tragedy echoes a similar incident in April 2025, when Harsimrat Randhawa, an international student from India, was killed under nearly identical circumstances—struck by a stray bullet while waiting for a bus in the same city.

These back-to-back incidents highlight a deepening crisis of public safety in Canadian urban centers, where innocent lives are being claimed amid escalating gang conflicts and the proliferation of firearms.

The Ghanaian community in Canada, as well as supporters back home, are mourning the loss of Belinda Sarkodie—a young woman who traveled abroad with hopes and aspirations, only to have her life abruptly ended by senseless violence.

Canadian police have launched a full investigation and are appealing to the public for information that could lead to the arrest of the shooters. The Ghanaian consulate is said to be offering support to the victim’s family and engaging with authorities to ensure justice is served.

This heartbreaking case serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for stronger public safety measures and community protection for international students and other vulnerable residents.
