A tragic plane crash on Saturday, August 16, 2025, claimed the lives of Colonel Patrick Gesore, a senior officer in the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), his wife, and four others. The incident occurred just minutes after takeoff from Lubutu, with the aircraft crashing approximately 34 kilometers from Kisangani.
The Antonov An-2 aircraft, reportedly on a technical inspection flight, was carrying seven people, including two pilots and three bodyguards. Only one bodyguard survived, according to reports.
Moments before the flight, a video captured Colonel Gesore and his wife in high spirits, interacting with fellow soldiers. His wife was seen handing out money to troops — a gesture now viewed as tragically symbolic.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Initial reports indicate the aircraft was undergoing certification and may have had mechanical issues.
This incident adds to growing concerns over aviation safety in the region and highlights the emotional toll on the Congolese military community.
