Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart Dies at 90: A Fallen Star

Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, once a captivating Pentecostal preacher with a massive following, has died at the age of 90. His death was announced Tuesday on his public Facebook page, though a cause of death was not immediately given. Swaggart had been in ill health in recent years.

The Louisiana native rose to fame with his dynamic sermons and a multimillion-dollar ministry, but his empire crumbled in the late 1980s after he was caught on camera with a prostitute in New Orleans. The scandal was one of several that brought down prominent TV preachers during that era.

In a tearful 1988 sermon, Swaggart confessed, “I have sinned against you,” and begged for forgiveness, without directly referencing the prostitution scandal. Despite the controversy, he continued preaching for decades, albeit to a much smaller audience. Swaggart resigned from the Assemblies of God after the church moved to defrock him for rejecting their disciplinary measures, marking a significant turning point in his career and legacy.
