What should have been a day of joy and celebration for FC Barcelona’s young sensation, Lamine Yamal, has now taken a dramatic and troubling turn. The football star, who recently turned 18, is under scrutiny after a viral social media clip from his ultra-private birthday party drew unexpected backlash—and now, government attention.
A Private Moment Gone Public
The controversy began when Yamal posted a short video clip from his birthday celebration. Though the event appeared to be exclusive and celebratory, the video spread rapidly online—and with it, public outrage began to brew. It wasn’t long before advocacy groups and the Spanish government were paying attention.
Spanish Government Takes Action
Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has now formally called on the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Ombudsman, and the Office Against Hate Crimes to launch an investigation. The concern? That the birthday event may have violated the General Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The move follows a formal complaint filed by the ADEE Association, which advocates for disability rights and inclusion. The key issue stems from alleged entertainment at the party involving individuals with dwarfism, which has been described by officials as degrading and discriminatory.
Potential Legal and Financial Consequences
Martín, the General Director for Disability Rights, issued a strong statement, warning that such acts “objectify people with dwarfism” and evoke a past society that “recalls medieval times.” If the investigation concludes that there was mockery, ridicule, or derision involved, those responsible could face hefty fines ranging from €600,000 to €1,000,000.
These fines are part of Spain’s updated legislative reforms aimed at strengthening protections for persons with disabilities and promoting dignity, respect, and equal treatment in public and private life.
