Paris, July 9, 2025 — In a breathtaking display of courage and selflessness, Fousseynou Cissé, a 39-year-old Senegalese immigrant, rescued six people — including four children — from a burning apartment building in Paris’s 18th arrondissement on July 4, 2025.
The blaze, believed to have been caused by a battery explosion, broke out in a sixth-floor apartment, trapping two families inside. As fire and smoke spread rapidly through the building, Cissé was preparing to evacuate with his wife and child when he heard cries for help from above.
Without thinking twice, he sprang into action.
Climbing through a skylight, Cissé navigated a narrow ledge nearly 20 meters high, balancing precariously to reach the trapped families. From there, he assisted two mothers in passing their children through a window to safety — one by one — before helping the adults escape as well.
A video of the daring rescue quickly went viral, drawing widespread admiration from across France and beyond. Social media users hailed Cissé as a real-life superhero, with many calling for national recognition.
The heroism did not go unnoticed. French President Emmanuel Macron personally called Cissé to commend him for his actions, and Paris city officials have announced he will be formally honored for his bravery in the coming days.
Despite the praise, Cissé has remained deeply humble.
“I’m not a hero,” he said in a local interview. “It’s just what my heart told me to do.”
The fire victims are all safe, thanks to his quick thinking and fearless response. As France applauds Cissé’s actions, many are also using the moment to highlight the contributions of immigrants who quietly serve their communities every day.
