Rwanda is considering accepting immigrants deported from the U.S., a move that has sparked concerns from human rights groups. This comes as Rwanda has increasingly positioned itself as a destination for migrants that Western countries want to relocate. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has voiced worries that some migrants sent to Rwanda could be returned to the countries they originally fled, a claim Kigali denies.

Recently, the U.S. deported an Iraqi refugee to Rwanda, which has heightened these concerns, especially in light of the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies and efforts to deport non-citizens. The U.S. has also faced legal challenges, such as the Supreme Court temporarily blocking the deportation of Venezuelan migrants accused of gang membership.
