Police Crackdown: 120+ Illegal Mining Machines Disabled, 13 Arrested in Western Region

Wassa Gyapa, Western Region – In a significant operation targeting illegal mining, the Western Central Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled over 120 “changfang” machines and apprehended 13 suspects at Wassa Gyapa. The operation marks a major step in the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining activities, locally known as “galamsey,” which have caused extensive environmental damage in the region.

The police operation, conducted earlier this week, targeted a known hotspot for illegal mining in the Wassa Gyapa area. “Changfang” machines, which are typically used to wash and process ore, were a primary focus of the operation due to their significant environmental impact. The suspects are currently in custody and are expected to face charges related to illegal mining activities.

This crackdown is a part of a broader initiative by the government and law enforcement agencies to curb illegal mining, protect water bodies, and preserve the environment. The operation sends a strong message to those involved in illegal mining that their activities will not be tolerated, and that authorities are committed to enforcing the laws of the country. The Western Central Regional Police Command has vowed to continue its efforts to identify and dismantle illegal mining operations throughout the region.
