OSP Sets the Record Straight: Extradition of Ken Ofori-Atta from U.S. Is Already Underway

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has clarified that it initiated and is actively pursuing the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently residing in the United States of America.

Responding to public statements made by the Deputy Attorney General, the OSP revealed that a formal extradition request was sent as far back as June 2025, following the issuance of a court warrant and Mr. Ofori-Atta’s placement on INTERPOL’s Red Notice. The OSP also confirmed that Mr. Ofori-Atta left Ghana in January 2025 and has refused to return voluntarily for questioning.

The extradition process, which was triggered by the OSP, has been routed through the Chief of Staff and transmitted to the Attorney General’s Department, the official channel for handling international legal cooperation. Contrary to claims of delay, the OSP maintains that it is finalizing its docket after obtaining new evidence during a recent operation involving Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).

The OSP strongly denied any intention to frustrate the process, adding that security leaks of sensitive communications—circulating on social media—have endangered both the case and the safety of its personnel.

The Office emphasized that extradition is a multi-step legal and diplomatic process involving several state institutions, and assured the public that it is moving forward efficiently and within the law.

A full update on the investigation and extradition efforts is expected before the end of October 2025.
