Accra, July 29, 2025 — Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially opened nominations for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections. The announcement was made by the party’s General Secretary, Justice Frimpong Kodua (JFK), at a press conference held at the NPP’s national headquarters in Accra.
The much-anticipated primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026, will determine who leads the party into the 2028 general elections. The nomination window officially opened today, July 29, 2025, and will remain open until August 28, 2025.
Hefty Fees and Strict Procedures
In his statement, JFK revealed the financial commitments required from aspirants:
Application Fee: GH¢100,000 (non-refundable, to be paid via banker’s draft) Filing Fee: GH¢500,000 Compulsory Development Fee: An additional fee yet to be determined by the party
This brings the minimum cost of entry to GH¢600,000 — excluding the development fee, making it one of the most expensive internal political contests in Ghana’s recent history.
Who Can Vote?
Eligible voters in the NPP flagbearer elections will include:
All voting members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) All voting members of Regional Executive Committees All former Regional Executives All voting members of the Constituency Executive Committees
The Front Runners: Six Declared So Far
So far, six political heavyweights have declared their intention to contest the NPP flagbearer slot. They are:
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum – MP for Bosomtwe and former Minister of Education Dr. Bryan Acheampong – MP for Abetifi and former Minister of Food and Agriculture Kennedy Agyapong – Former MP for Assin Central and outspoken party stalwart Kwabena Agyapong – Former General Secretary of the NPP Boakye Agyarko – Former Minister of Energy Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia – Former Vice President of Ghana
The race promises to be a politically charged contest as the NPP seeks a strong successor to lead its campaign in 2028 after two consecutive terms in government.
