VATICAN CITY – After two days of deliberation inside the Sistine Chapel, Robert Prevost has been chosen as the new Pope. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV, succeeding Francis as the 267th Pope. This appointment signifies his role as the religious leader for Catholics worldwide and the successor to St. Peter.
The announcement was made by Cardinal Mamberti, who proclaimed “Habemus papam!” (We have a pope!) from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The selection was confirmed when white smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the news to the world. Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square, chanting “Abbiamo Papa, ole, ole, ole” and “Viva il Papa,” waving flags from various nations.
Even cardinals who were not part of the conclave, such as American Cardinals Sean O’Malley and Donald Wuerl, joined the crowd. A marching brass band and Swiss Guards marked the occasion, celebrating the new Pontiff. The Pontifical Swiss Guard, the Vatican’s official security, played a key role in the ceremony.
