At the GJA Royal Banquet, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II delivered a powerful message on the dangers of illegal mining. “My forefathers mined gold 400 years ago, and all the gold bequeathed to us is still there. They were not galamseyers — they never destroyed any river,” he said, questioning why modern mining now threatens the land and water.
The Asantehene urged government leaders to act decisively, even in the face of political pressure. “Governments are afraid to take decisions because people say, ‘if you stop it, we won’t vote for you.’ Don’t let them vote for you — take the right decision and let’s move forward,” he emphasized, stressing that protecting the environment is a service to the people and to public health.
