Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has firmly defended the club’s decision to continue playing Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, despite ongoing legal proceedings related to multiple serious allegations.
In a press conference ahead of Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Asia, Arteta addressed growing scrutiny surrounding the club’s handling of the matter. The Spanish manager emphasized that the club acted in accordance with established procedures and stood by the choices made regarding Partey’s involvement in the team.
“One hundred per cent,” Arteta stated when asked whether Arsenal followed the correct protocols. “There are processes and legal boundaries we must respect. This is a very complicated and sensitive issue currently being handled by the court.”
Thomas Partey faces six charges in total stemming from allegations by three different women. These include:
Two counts of rape involving one woman Three counts of rape involving a second woman One count of sexual assault involving a third woman
The midfielder has not yet entered a plea in public, and he is expected to stand trial in August 2025. The case, understandably, has generated widespread media attention and prompted concerns from some fans and advocacy groups about whether it was appropriate for Arsenal to continue fielding Partey.
Despite the gravity of the charges, Arteta reiterated that the club was not in a position to suspend the player based on allegations alone. He acknowledged public concern but insisted that the legal process must be allowed to take its course.
“We understand people have questions. We also have a duty to follow the law and to support due process,” Arteta added, declining to offer further comment on the specifics of the case.
The situation presents a complex challenge for Arsenal—balancing the legal rights of an individual presumed innocent until proven guilty with the ethical responsibilities of a global football institution.
As the trial date nears, the footballing world will undoubtedly keep a close watch on both the legal proceedings and how Arsenal continues to navigate this high-profile and controversial matter.
