Man Sets Fire to Ahodwo Community in Kumasi After Breakup, Leaving Several Homeless

A shocking case of arson has rocked the Ahodwo High Tension community in Kumasi, after a 38-year-old man, identified as Victor Antwi, allegedly set fire to a section of the neighborhood following a breakup with his girlfriend. The incident, which occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, left multiple families homeless and caused widespread destruction.

According to preliminary police reports, the suspected arsonist was enraged after his 25-year-old girlfriend, Madam Gladys Sarfowaah, ended their relationship. In what appears to be a fit of jealousy and anger, Antwi allegedly stormed Gladys’s residence and set it ablaze.

Fire Spread Rapidly During Football Match

At the time of the attack, many residents were gathered to watch the FIFA Club World Cup match between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Within minutes, the fire reportedly spread from Gladys’s home to neighboring structures, engulfing a significant portion of the community. Panic and confusion erupted as residents fled their homes, some losing all their belongings in the flames.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses say they saw Victor Antwi entering the house moments before the blaze began.

“We thought it was just a lovers’ quarrel, but suddenly there was smoke, then flames. It spread so fast, people couldn’t even salvage their things,” said a local resident.

Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after, managing to contain the fire before it consumed the entire area. However, dozens of residents have been displaced and are currently seeking shelter with neighbors or in temporary structures.

Police Investigation Underway

Victor Antwi was reportedly apprehended shortly after the incident and is currently in police custody. The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that an official investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the act.

“This is a serious criminal matter. The suspect will be charged accordingly after investigations,” a police spokesperson said.

Authorities have also urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the investigation.

Community in Shock

The Ahodwo High Tension area remains tense as residents grapple with the aftermath. Local leaders are calling for support to help displaced families recover from the loss.

“We appeal to NADMO, NGOs, and the general public to assist the affected families. This is not just a fire — it’s a tragedy caused by emotional instability,” said one assembly member.

Conclusion

What began as a personal dispute has now escalated into a full-blown crisis, affecting an entire community. As legal proceedings begin, the people of Ahodwo hope for swift justice — and help to rebuild what they’ve lost.
