In a decisive intelligence-led operation on Wednesday, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Kintampo North led a joint team of military and police personnel to arrest four illegal miners (galamseyers) operating on the Black Volta River.
The crackdown comes in response to increasing pollution of the river due to illegal mining activities. Acting on a tip-off, the team raided the site, arrested the suspects, and seized mining equipment, some of which will be destroyed to prevent future use.
“It has come to the realization of my municipality that there is a team of galamseyers here… We are making sure the galamsey business becomes a lion’s den,” the MCE stated firmly.
The Black Volta, a vital water source, has suffered significant environmental degradation. The MCE vowed to continue aggressive action until illegal mining is completely rooted out of the municipality.
