Kenyan president deflects shoe thrown at him during a rally

Migori County, Kenya – President William Ruto of Kenya had a close call during a rally in Migori County on Sunday when someone in the crowd threw a shoe at him. Videos circulating on social media show the incident, which occurred while Ruto was addressing public concerns about the high cost of living.

Ruto was speaking about government efforts to lower the price of fertilizer when the shoe was thrown. Reacting quickly, the President blocked the flying object with his arm, avoiding any apparent injury. “We have said we are reducing the price of fertilizer, true or false?” he remarked as the shoe bounced off him.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen reported that police have arrested three individuals in connection with the incident, according to The Star newspaper. This event draws parallels to a similar incident in 2008 when an Iraqi journalist threw a shoe at then-US President George W. Bush as a sign of protest against the aftermath of the US-led invasion of Iraq.
