Dr. James Orleans-Lindsay, the Executive Chairman of JL Holdings and a respected authority on Accra’s land history, recently shared a painful lesson learned the hard way: even the most diligent can fall victim to fraud. In a candid interview with Bola Ray on GHOne TV, Dr. Orleans-Lindsay recounted a devastating experience from 2014 where he lost a staggering $1.3 million in a fraudulent land deal.
The deal seemed legitimate enough. Dr. Orleans-Lindsay took all the right steps, engaging a reputable realtor and conducting thorough due diligence on the land title. “I did everything,” he explained. “I went through an agent, a realtor, a solid guy… When I did a search on the land title, it all came out; everything was correct.” Unbeknownst to him, the scammer had masterfully cloned the land title, creating a convincing facade of legitimacy.
The shocking discovery that the land actually belonged to someone else left Dr. Orleans-Lindsay reeling. The financial blow was significant, and the emotional toll of being deceived, despite his expertise, was profound. He now shares his story as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and skepticism, even when things appear to be in order. “Every time I tell people; when it’s too good to be true, then it’s not true,” he wisely advises. His experience serves as a stark reminder that in the world of real estate, even seasoned professionals can be vulnerable to sophisticated scams.
