Caerphilly, Wales – August 2025: An inquest has been opened into the sudden and tragic death of Welsh Labour Member of the Senedd (MS) Hefin David, who was found unresponsive at a property in Nelson, Caerphilly on 12 August, just one day before his 48th birthday.
At a hearing held at Gwent Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that Mr. David was found hanging, and was pronounced dead at 17:27 BST. The cause of death remains unascertained, pending toxicology results. He was identified at the scene by his sister. The full inquest is scheduled to take place on 7 April 2026.
Mr. David had served as MS for Caerphilly since 2016, and was regarded as a prominent Labour backbencher known for his outspoken views, energy in Senedd debates, and cross-party popularity. Before entering full-time politics, he lectured in human resource management at Cardiff Metropolitan University, and spent a decade as a Caerphilly councillor. He also served as one of five Senedd commissioners, overseeing the daily operations of the Welsh parliament.
Following his passing, Mr. David’s family issued a heartfelt statement, saying:
“It is clear from the very many messages we have received that Hefin was widely respected and held in genuine affection by the community he represented, and by those he worked with during his many years of public service.
But more than this, Hefin was a devoted father who was adored by his daughters Caitlin and Holly, a much loved son to Wynne and Christine, a beloved brother to Siân, a brilliant uncle to Osian and Catrin, and a soulmate to his cherished partner Vikki.
We are very grateful to all those who have reached out to us since Hefin’s passing, and ask now for privacy to grieve.”
Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described Mr. David as “a powerful voice for the people of Wales,” while Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan called him “an outstanding politician” and a “much-loved member of the Labour family.”
