Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traore has become the first leader to receive the new biometric identity card introduced by the Sahel Alliance (AES), which includes Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Approved in December 2024, the card aims to make travel within the region easier, strengthen security, and boost trade. Full production will begin in January 2026, and all citizens aged 5 and above can register, with the card becoming mandatory from age 13. It costs $6, is valid for 10 years, and uses secure materials to prevent fraud and terrorism.
