At least four people have died following severe storms and flash flooding in Tennessee on Tuesday, local officials confirmed. Among the victims was a family of three—Tomas Vicente Lopez, 29, Giomara Epifania Vasquez, 27, and their three-year-old daughter, Emma Vicente—killed when a tree fell on their car in East Ridge, near Chattanooga.
Authorities also recovered the body of a man believed to have been swept away by floodwaters after reportedly bypassing fire department barricades. His identity has not yet been confirmed.
Chattanooga experienced 6.42 inches (16 cm) of rain on Tuesday—the second-highest single-day rainfall since records began in 1879, according to the National Weather Service.
Emergency crews worked into the night rescuing residents from flooded homes and vehicles. In one incident, firefighters pulled six people from a van nearly swept away by an overflowing creek.
Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp has declared a local state of emergency in response to the flooding, which continues to pose threats, especially in areas like Knoxville where warnings remain in effect.
