Ghanaian Oncology Nurse Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti Wins $250,000 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award

Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, an oncology nurse from Ghana, has been awarded the 2025 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, along with a $250,000 prize, for her pioneering work in cancer care and nurse training. The award was presented in Dubai by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence.

Ohene Oti leads nursing at the National Radiotherapy Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Centre at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. She was selected from 100,000 applicants across 199 countries. Her work addresses cancer care inequities in Ghana and Africa through education and system reform.

Ohene Oti has helped launch training programs with international institutions and co-developed Ghana’s postgraduate oncology nursing curriculum, training over 60 oncology nurse specialists and 10 breast care nurses. She also influences cancer nursing policy across Africa and advocates for culturally relevant and equitable cancer care.

The Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, launched by Aster DM Healthcare, highlights nurses’ contributions in leadership, research, innovation, and community service. This year saw a 28% increase in applications. Dr. Azad Moopen, founder of Aster DM Healthcare, praised Ohene Oti as an innovator and changemaker.
