Government of Ghana Introduces Online Import Duty Payments to Ease Port Delays and Support 24-Hour Economy

In a major digital shift aimed at modernizing port operations and enhancing efficiency, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) now allows importers to estimate and pay customs duties online weeks before their goods arrive at the port.

Announced by GRA Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong on Joy News’ PM Express (August 21, 2025), the new system enables importers to complete payments from the comfort of their homes or offices, significantly reducing the need for physical visits. Only the final physical clearance of goods requires presence at the port.

“This means no more long queues or delays just to make a payment,” Sarpong said. “You can estimate and pay your duties two weeks ahead, right from your desk.”

This innovation is part of the government’s broader 24-hour economy agenda, a flagship initiative launched by President John Mahama. The program seeks to boost industrialisation, job creation, and domestic revenue by ensuring key sectors like ports operate around the clock.

The GRA has collaborated with banks, shipping lines, and port authorities, and has trained its personnel to support a smooth rollout. The initiative is expected to reduce congestion, enhance trade efficiency, and support Ghana’s vision of a digitally driven economy.
