France is grappling with its largest wildfire of the summer, which broke out Tuesday in the village of Ribaute, near the Spanish border. The blaze has already consumed over 13,000 hectares—an area larger than Paris—and remains highly active.
Approximately 2,000 firefighters and several water-bombing aircraft are battling the flames, but hot, dry, and windy conditions are making containment extremely difficult.
Tragically, one person has died, and at least 13 others, including 11 firefighters, have been injured. Authorities confirmed that one previously missing person has been found safe.
Villages in the area, including Jonquières, have been fully evacuated. Mayor Jacques Piraux described the scene as “a scene of sadness and desolation… it looks like a lunar landscape,” with much of the village destroyed.
The fire continues to threaten homes, vineyards, and forests in the region as emergency teams work tirelessly to contain it.
