Four Public Officials Charged for Using Fake Documents from Bawumia’s Office in Rice Import Scheme

Accra, Ghana – In a stunning development, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially charged four public officials for their involvement in a scheme to fraudulently claim imported rice from Thailand in 2022, using fake documents purportedly from the office of Vice President Dr. Bawumia.

The accused include Seidu, an employee of the National Insurance Commission, and Osei, a former Director at the Vice President’s Secretariat. They allegedly collaborated with two senior Customs officials, Abban and Hyde, to bypass standard customs procedures in order to secure the release of the rice.

According to reports, the group attempted to auction the containers of rice to Seidu, despite the fact that the goods were legally imported and all necessary duties had been paid. However, their scheme was thwarted following internal investigations and a subsequent High Court ruling that exposed their fraudulent activities. The case is now set to proceed in the courts, with the OSP seeking to hold the accused accountable for their alleged crimes. The incident has raised serious questions about integrity and oversight within public institutions, and is likely to fuel further debate about corruption and governance in Ghana.
