Ukrainian lawmaker and former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in the western city of Lviv on Saturday, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed.

According to the Prosecutor General’s office, Parubiy, 54, was killed instantly after a gunman opened fire and fled the scene. A nationwide manhunt has been launched to apprehend the suspect.

Parubiy, a key figure in Ukraine’s 2013-14 pro-EU protests, served as parliamentary speaker from 2016 to 2019 and briefly held the post of National Security and Defence Council secretary in 2014, during the onset of conflict in eastern Ukraine.

President Zelenskiy extended his condolences to Parubiy’s family, stating that all resources are being deployed to bring the perpetrator to justice. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi emphasized the urgency of the investigation, noting that no place is entirely safe in a nation at war.

Authorities have not yet indicated any direct link between the killing and Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
