Ion Iliescu, Romania’s first freely elected president and a key figure in the country’s turbulent transition from communism to democracy, has died at the age of 95.

The Romanian government confirmed his passing on Tuesday, following his hospitalization in early June in Bucharest due to lung cancer. A state funeral is expected, with details to be announced soon.

Born on March 3, 1930, Iliescu served as president in two terms — from 1989 to 1996 and again from 2000 to 2004. He rose to prominence during the 1989 revolution that ended Nicolae Ceaușescu’s communist regime. However, his legacy remains controversial.

He faced crimes against humanity charges over the violent uprising and his role in the 1990 Mineriad, when miners were called in to suppress student protests. Though indicted, Iliescu was never convicted.

In recent years, he had largely stepped away from public life, occasionally sharing posts on his blog. His final message, posted on May 19, congratulated Bucharest’s pro-EU mayor, Nicusor Dan, on his election as party leader.

Iliescu’s death marks the end of an era in modern Romanian political history.
