Former Justice Minister Sentenced to 3 Years with Forced Labor

In a major anti-corruption development in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, former Justice Minister Constant Mutamba has been sentenced to three years of forced labor for embezzling public funds. The Court of Cassation found Mutamba guilty of misappropriating $19 million meant for the construction of a prison in Kisangani.

The ruling, delivered on September 2, 2025, also bars him from holding public office for five years following the completion of his sentence.

This conviction marks a significant step in the DRC’s efforts to combat high-level corruption and enforce accountability among public officials.
