Australia’s first domestically designed and built orbital rocket, Eris, crashed just 14 seconds after lift-off during its maiden test flight. Launched by Gilmour Space Technologies at the Bowen Orbital Spaceport in North Queensland, the rocket initially rose off the ground before losing momentum and falling back, creating a plume of white smoke.
Despite the crash, Gilmour Space hailed the attempt as a “giant leap” for Australia’s space ambitions. The company confirmed no injuries occurred and stated a second launch is planned within six to eight months.
