Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix and ordered a market recall of affected products due to serious health and safety violations. The announcement was made in a press release on Sunday, August 3, following growing concerns from consumers and an in-depth investigation into the operations of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited—the company responsible for manufacturing the product.

What Went Wrong?
According to the FDA, the suspension stems from multiple breaches at the production facility, including poor maintenance of critical manufacturing equipment and inadequate safety monitoring systems. These failures resulted in faulty sealing mechanisms, especially in the canned variants of the tomato mix, leading to contamination.
Consumers had reported bloated pouches and visible mould in several products, prompting the regulatory body to act. “These breaches present unacceptable risks to public health,” the FDA stated. “We have acted swiftly to suspend production and ensure the affected products are removed from the market.”
History of Non-Compliance
In a surprising revelation, the FDA disclosed that Nutrifoods had previously been barred from producing Tasty Tom tomato mix as far back as January 2025, raising serious concerns about regulatory compliance and enforcement. The recurrence of these violations has now triggered an internal investigation within the FDA itself.
“We are committed to transparency and accountability,” the Authority said. “Should any internal failings be identified, decisive action will be taken to strengthen our regulatory framework.”
What Consumers Should Do
Consumers are strongly advised to stop using any Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, particularly canned versions and pouches of 380g and 1.05kg, and return them to the point of purchase. The FDA has pledged to continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as necessary.
This incident underscores the critical importance of food safety standards and rigorous oversight in protecting public health.
