FBI agents searched the home and office of former National Security Adviser John Bolton on Friday, as part of an investigation reportedly linked to the handling of classified information. Bolton, a vocal critic of Donald Trump since leaving the administration in 2019, has not been charged or detained, and has yet to comment publicly.
The FBI confirmed “authorized activity” at his Bethesda, Maryland home and Washington, DC office, while sources told CBS News that the search relates in part to classified materials. Police and agents were seen entering the premises and removing boxes.
Bolton previously faced accusations from the Trump White House over his 2020 memoir The Room Where It Happened, which detailed his time in the administration and was sharply critical of Trump. Although the Justice Department sued him for allegedly disclosing classified information, the case was dropped in 2021.
President Trump distanced himself from the investigation, calling Bolton a “sleazebag” but claiming he had no role in the FBI’s actions. Vice President JD Vance confirmed classified materials are “certainly part of the investigation,” while dismissing claims of political motivation.
Amid the search, FBI Director Kash Patel posted “no one is above the law,” echoed by Attorney General Pam Bondi, who vowed, “Justice will be pursued.”
The investigation comes as Bolton continues to criticize Trump’s leadership and foreign policy decisions, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine.
