Ethiopian Airlines To Launch Electric planes by 2026

Ethiopian Airlines is charting a bold new course in the skies — and on the ground — as it positions itself at the forefront of aviation innovation and logistics in Africa. In a significant announcement, the airline revealed plans to introduce two small electric aircraft by 2026, marking a major step forward in its commitment to sustainable and cutting-edge air transport.

The electric planes, developed in partnership with U.S.-based Archer Aviation, are part of an agreement signed back on March 17, 2017. These aircraft are designed to service tourist destinations, dramatically reducing travel time for passengers. Routes that currently take 60 to 90 minutes by car could soon take just 10 minutes by air. This leap in efficiency not only enhances the travel experience but also reflects Ethiopia’s growing ambition to embrace eco-friendly, tech-driven transport solutions.

CEO Ato Mesfin Tassew confirmed the import timeline, noting that 2026 will mark a turning point for air mobility in Ethiopia. “This is part of our vision to modernize and innovate air transport across the country,” he said.

But the airline’s aspirations don’t stop at the runway. Ethiopian Airlines is also expanding its footprint in the logistics sector, with a special focus on supporting the fast-growing world of e-commerce. While the airline doesn’t operate as a direct seller or marketplace, it plays a critical role in enabling the transport and delivery of goods for online platforms.

“We have built a facility that enables us to operate on a global logistics scale. However, we do not engage in e-commerce directly — our role is to facilitate transport and logistics,” Ato Mesfin explained when asked about partnerships with global giants like Amazon and Alibaba, as well as local players such as Zemen Market.

A key part of this logistics push includes improvements to first and last-mile delivery operations through the Bole Airport Cargo Terminal. While the infrastructure is already in place to support large-scale logistics, Ato Mesfin acknowledged that there’s still work to be done to streamline and expand services across the country.

This dual focus on sustainable aviation and high-performance logistics reflects a larger vision: transforming Ethiopian Airlines from a traditional carrier into a future-ready, tech-enabled aviation and logistics leader. As the rest of the world watches, Ethiopia’s national carrier continues to set the pace for innovation across Africa.

With electric aircraft on the horizon and advanced cargo solutions underway, Ethiopian Airlines is proving that the sky is no longer the limit — it’s just the beginning.
