Egypt has launched construction on the world’s largest man-made river, a $5.2 billion project aimed at transforming desert land into fertile farmland. The massive waterway is part of the country’s New Delta initiative, which seeks to boost agricultural production, enhance water security, and reduce dependence on the Nile.
The artificial river will carry treated agricultural drainage water across vast distances to irrigate over 1 million acres of desert. Authorities say the project is a key step toward sustainable development and securing Egypt’s food future.
Construction is already underway, with the government calling it one of the largest engineering efforts in the region’s history.
