Do not allow any institution, including banks to photocopy your Ghana card – NIA warns

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a strong warning to the public: Do not allow any institution, including banks, to photocopy your Ghana Card for verification purposes. This practice is not permitted and directly violates data protection guidelines.

Your Ghana Card contains sensitive personal information, and unauthorized photocopying increases the risk of identity theft and fraud. Institutions have alternative, secure methods for verifying your identity without needing to create physical copies of your card.

What to Do Instead:

  • Inform institutions: If an institution requests a photocopy of your Ghana Card, politely inform them that it is against NIA guidelines and data protection laws.
  • Suggest alternatives: Encourage them to use other verification methods, such as electronic verification systems or card readers, which are designed to securely access the necessary information.
  • Report violations: If an institution insists on photocopying your card, report them to the NIA and the Data Protection Commission.

Protecting your Ghana Card is crucial for safeguarding your personal information. Stay informed, be vigilant, and help ensure that institutions respect your data protection rights.
