Calling a Man ‘Bald’ Can Be Sexual Harassment, UK Tribunal Rules

A UK employment tribunal has made headlines by ruling that calling a man “bald” in the workplace can legally constitute sexual harassment. The case involved electrician Tony Finn, who was insulted by his supervisor with the words “stupid bald c***.”

The tribunal found that the comment, combined with other abusive behaviour, created a hostile work environment and targeted Finn because baldness is predominantly a male trait. Under UK equality laws, harassment related to sex includes unwanted conduct that violates dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, or offensive environment — which the tribunal concluded had occurred.

While the ruling doesn’t mean every remark about baldness is harassment, it sets a precedent that workplace insults linked to male‑typical characteristics can be legally actionable. The case has sparked debate, with some calling it extreme, while others say it reflects similar protections against appearance-based harassment for women.
