Bryan Acheampong to Chairman Wontumi: ‘Sit Down and Shut Up – I Just Bailed You!’ at Heated NPP Meeting

In a dramatic turn of events within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a tense exchange reportedly occurred between two influential party figures during a recent national executive council meeting. According to the Bono East Regional Secretary of the NPP—who is also a member of the party’s executive council—Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and a flagbearer hopeful, clashed with Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The Incident

The altercation reportedly happened during a discussion regarding recent comments made by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who had expressed concerns over being neglected by the party. Bryan Acheampong was addressing the council, urging members to reflect on President Kufuor’s sentiments and take them seriously.

Chairman Wontumi, however, interrupted Acheampong’s remarks to shift the discussion to another hot topic—President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s recent denial of media reports suggesting he was attempting to postpone the NPP’s upcoming delegates’ conference, scheduled for July 19, 2025.

Acheampong, allegedly unimpressed by the interruption, reportedly snapped at Wontumi, telling him to “sit down and shut up,” adding that he had “just bailed him” during an encounter with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

A Joke or Something More?

While some council members were reportedly unsure whether Acheampong’s comment was made in jest or in seriousness, the Bono East Regional Secretary hinted that if the comment was sincere, it was highly inappropriate. “If he meant it, then it was not the best way to speak to the Ashanti Regional Chairman,” he noted.

The alleged reference to Wontumi’s past legal challenges adds another layer of complexity to the situation, suggesting underlying tensions and political maneuvering within the party’s top ranks as the flagbearer race heats up.

Implications for the NPP

This reported incident, coming at a crucial moment just days before the delegates’ conference, reflects the high stakes and growing tensions among leading figures in the NPP. With multiple hopefuls vying for the party’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2026 general elections, any sign of internal discord could have broader implications for party unity and public perception.

Whether this clash will escalate or be quietly resolved remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the road to July 19—and beyond—will be anything but quiet for the New Patriotic Party.
