Bridge Over River Collapses in Gujarat, India, Killing Nine and Leaving Several Missing

Vadodara, Gujarat — July 9, 2025

At least nine people lost their lives after a section of a bridge over a river collapsed in India’s western state of Gujarat on Wednesday. The collapse occurred in the Vadodara district, an area that has been experiencing heavy rains in recent days.

According to reports from the Press Trust of India, several vehicles were on the bridge when the incident took place, causing many to fall into the river below. Gujarat’s Health Minister, Rushikesh Patel, confirmed the tragic deaths and said that at least five people were rescued from the river.

The bridge, constructed in 1985, has now come under scrutiny following the accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the incident, calling it “deeply saddening” and offering sympathy to the families of those affected.

Context: A Pattern of Infrastructure Failures

India has faced ongoing challenges with aging and unsafe infrastructure, leading to tragic incidents on highways and bridges across the country. The Gujarat bridge collapse is not an isolated event; in 2022, a century-old cable suspension bridge in the same state gave way, resulting in the deaths of at least 132 people.

Experts highlight that many bridges in India are decades old and often poorly maintained, increasing the risk of such catastrophic failures, especially during heavy rains or floods.

Response and Moving Forward

Rescue operations are underway, and authorities are working to recover victims and assist survivors. The government is expected to conduct an investigation into the causes of the collapse, with calls for urgent improvements in infrastructure safety and maintenance across the country.

For now, Gujarat mourns the loss of lives in this tragic accident, while the broader issue of infrastructure safety remains a pressing concern for India’s future development.
