Bank of Ghana: Celebrating Six Decades of the Ghana Cedi

On July 19th, 2025, the Ghana Cedi will celebrate its 60th anniversary as Ghana’s sole legal tender. Since its inception, replacing the strong pound, the Cedi has been instrumental in shaping Ghana’s economic sovereignty and development. Over the past six decades, the Cedi has undergone several modifications in form and policy to adapt to the evolving demands of the Ghanaian economy. From the first notes and coins to the secure currency we use today, the Cedi’s reforms embody Ghana’s tenacity, innovation, and quest for economic stability.

In recognition of this significant milestone, the Bank of Ghana will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Cedi’s issue with a series of nationwide activities and engagements between July and December 2025. These will include official launch events, public exhibitions, educational campaigns, and stakeholder forums. This anniversary provides Ghanaians with a valuable opportunity to reflect on the Cedi’s history, celebrate the progress made, and reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect the currency’s value and integrity.

More than just a medium of exchange, the Cedi symbolizes our pride, heritage, and shared aspirations for a prosperous future. Its evolution reflects Ghana’s resilience, innovation, and pursuit of a robust economy. The Bank of Ghana invites the public, institutions, organizations, stakeholders, and development partners to join in celebrating this important milestone. Further details regarding the programs and activities will be announced soon. The Bank of Ghana remains committed to maintaining a stable Cedi in pursuit of overall price stability.
